Recycle Rutherford on WGNS: May 2025
What Happens After the Curb? Meet WM
Monday, October 27, 2025, 7:00 p.m.
Heritage Center, 225 W. College St. (just off the Square)
Citizen’s organization Recycle Rutherford invites all interested people to join them for
their fall meeting on Monday, October 27, 2025, 7:00 p.m., Heritage Center, 225 W.
College St.
Representatives from WM will speak, discussing “What happens after the curb?”
Whether it’s trash or recyclables, the WM team will discuss the process of managing
waste (in its current state and what it could look like in the future). Speakers will include
Molly Morrissey community relations manager, Paul Farley, recycling operations
manager, and Tom Brandon, public sector representative.
In August 2024, Rutherford County leaders signed a five-year contract with Waste
Management Inc. of Tennessee, known as WM, to operate the transfer station under
construction at 6000 Landfill Road, Murfreesboro. The transfer station, which opened in
the spring, is a facility to which solid waste is delivered and prepared for transport to its
ultimate destination.
The new transfer station is a key component in the county’s efforts to move forward as
Middle Point Landfill, operated by Republic Services, will reach capacity in the near
future.
At the announcement of the contract signing in a WGNS story, Mayor Joe Carr was
quoted as saying, "This is a landmark as we continue to provide essential services for
Rutherford County in the most cost-effective manner." The article also stated that
Rutherford County will own and oversee the operation of the transfer station, which is
designed to be financially self-supporting with no property tax dollars associated with
the facilities operation.
The public is invited to attend the October meeting. In addition to parking in front of the
Heritage Center, additional parking is available across the street in the bank parking lot
after hours. The Heritage Center is located just off the Square.
